An International Dweller
I am an international traveler, but I am also a dweller. Wherever I go, I make it my home. All my 18 years of life can be distinctively divided into four periods, China, Canada, China, and the United States, which define my existence and relation to the world.
I was born on March 6, 1990 in a beautiful coastal city in China, the City of Dalian. The first part of my life up until 11 years old was spent in this great city of generous, warm, and optimistic people. I do not remember much about my school years because mostly they were mundane and typical: I believe I did everything I was supposed to do as an elementary student and received every award there was to a 4th grader. My most vivid memory of that period was the trips I accompanied my grandpa, an official in the city’s Civil Affairs Bureau, in his spare time to the poor households in the city and surrounding areas. I got to see at such an early age with my own eyes the different lives people had and how privileged I was to be born in a family with means. I was mostly touched by the sincere care exhibited by my grandpa and the optimism the people showed despite dire living conditions.
My second period started with my enrollment in a private boarding school in Canada as a fifth grader. For the first time, I experienced what it meant to be isolated and lonely. Despite my superior language skills compared to my peers in China, my English was far from being adequate to effectively communicate with teachers and classmates. At age 11, I was totally alone on my own in a foreign land. I remember I spent the first lunch time alone in the classroom because I failed to understand the instructions for lunch break. I spent countless nights staying up late missing my family in the beloved city of Dalian. I wondered why I had to leave everything I knew and loved to a place with no connections to me. However, as time went by, I quickly adapted myself to the new life and gradually fell in love with the new country, new school, and made a lot of new friends from all over the world. Under a new learning environment where individuality and creativity are avidly encouraged, I discovered so many things about myself I did not know I was capable of: I was selected to the school soccer team, basketball team; swimming and hockey became my favorite sports. I even found myself attracted to Saxophone and joined the school band. In a short period of time, I transformed from a newcomer to a native, a dweller in a new country.
Due to changes in family situations, I had to leave Canada behind and continued my schooling back in China starting seventh grade. The challenges were far greater than everyone had expected. In a country where I was born and raised till I was 11 years old, I became a foreigner again. I was totally uncomfortable with the learning styles in Chinese classrooms, even though I once thrived in it. I was so far lagged behind in math and sciences, and Chinese writing. Once again, my resilience bounced me back and soon I was on top of my game again. In a year, I ranked top 10 among a class of 700 students, and led in many areas of school life, such as sports and music, due to my experiences gained in Canada. I was remade and born again as a Chinese native.
My current period in life began in 2006 when an opportunity arose to study in the United States to complete my high school. The new life was not without its barriers and obstacles, but it was a much easier transition, and I quickly felt like home. This is the period when I was developed into a mature young man who has a love and passion for academic studies, sports, music, and community services. I was selected to the school soccer team, the first Chinese who has ever achieved that in the 140-year history of the school. I volunteered in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won the hearts and minds of friends all over the world with my dedication, professionalism, and great communication skills. I also did several presentations to my teachers and fellow students about my experience at the Beijing Olympics when I returned to the US.
My life so far consists of the four distinctive periods, each representing a piece of pearl on a necklace that is my life, connected by a silk thread. I am ready for the next phrase, where more exciting adventures await. I will be traveling alone to Georgetown, and become a dweller there, too, as I have always been.
