I have two principal intellectual interests: one is the systematic study of Chinese classics in philosophy and literature since I was four, and the other is my strong interest and solid training in sciences. The combination of the two seemingly unrelated interests, one ancient and the other, modern, has led to my selection of biological engineering as major in CALS, where I hope to grow into a leader to protect and preserve our one and only Mother Earth for ourselves and future generations.
From Chinese classics I learned of the concept “harmony between nature and man,” which teaches us that while nature provides mankind with what is needed to survive: food, shelter, and playground, man should not take excessively from nature in order to maintain a largely harmonious balance between the two. However, as modern sciences and technology advanced dramatically to strengthen man’s capacity to take from nature, the equilibrium is broken. My study in Chinese classics provided me with a unique perspective on the root causes of today’s environmental problems. The downward path toward deterioration of the environment during the past several hundred years suggests that while the advancement of science and technology can enrich our lives, it also can have damaging impact on our living environment as well if the teaching of “harmony between nature and man” is not adhered to.
My other interest in modern sciences and technology, especially my solid training in these areas made me realize that to restore the harmonious balance between nature and man, we need to develop more advanced science and technology, and take interdisciplinary approaches to address the environmental problems. In high school, I showed great interests and potentials in math and sciences, and my ability to do independent scientific research improved greatly. In one project, I applied engineering principles in the design and make of a micro-displacement cutter, a device with useful applications in biology. It was awarded Gold Prize for the National Engineering Award for High School Students. During the process, I experimented with many different kinds of materials and procedures, and consulted with experts at prestigious universities. Failures after failures did not deter me from finding new solutions. My creativity, diligence, and perseverance carried me through all difficulties to achieve final success. These qualities can make me a good student when I am enrolled in CALS.
What I like the most about the biological engineering major in CALS is its interdisciplinary approach, especially the inclusion of liberal arts into the curriculum. Students need to think beyond sciences, which is what future leaders in environmental protection need in their college training. A good leader needs not only to be an expert in science, but also to understand the bigger picture. I believe I am well positioned in both regards: deeply immersed in philosophy and literature, and solidly trained in sciences. With world-class faculty and facility at CALS, I am confident that I will be developed into a “leader committed for the improvement of life.”
