  Personal Statement

Born in a “legal community” where my parents, uncle and grandfather devoted their entire lives to work in the law, I was endowed with a sensitivity to the law. While other children ordinarily grow up with Barbie Dolls or Transformers, I was surrounded with continual discussion of legal cases and court sessions. This environment gradually fostered a nascent legal consciousness, and soon I could use the obtained legalese skillfully and logically to debate issues, to the pleasant surprise of my parents. It was around that time that a deep interest in law began to take form in my mind.

  点评1:单刀直入, 解说申请意图是SOP 写作中遵守的首条法则。也是这篇SOP的一个大亮点

Upon discovering my interest in law, my mother began to bring me to her office. My mother’s work fascinated me even more so than bedtime stories. I witnessed how she used the power the law has bestowed upon lawyers to champion the legitimate interests and deliver justice to her clients. When I was twelve, an old lady came visiting her office. The moment she saw my mother, the old lady suddenly knelt down. She was that grateful because my mom helped her husband in a medical malpractice case and thus her husband could receive treatment with the punitive damages awarded. When she called my mom “a lifesaver”, I was astonished. It was the first time I began to realize what lawyers do for a living: help people. I admire her great achievement and wish nothing more than to become as gifted and dedicated a lawyer as my mother. I feel lucky when I have the chance to help other people and would feel even luckier if helping people was my occupation.

Fueled by my family and my dream, I chose legal English as my major during my undergraduate studies at XYZ University of Economics and Law and took legal courses at ABC University. At XYZ University School of Law, I read cases extensively, practised drafting legal memoranda and learned to identify and articulate legal issues with relevant facts. In the ever-changing nature of law, it is a balance of rights and responsibilities that provides incentives for good behavior and disincentives for damaging behavior. At times the law is simple and straightforward that captures the interest of the public. At other times, it can be complex and involved, requiring to be interpreted. Studying the subject intensively was a transformative process that forced me to break down my previous modes of thinking in order to build up the intellectual structures legal reasoning and analysis require. Slowly but surely, I developed the ability to analyze and synthesize facts, honed my intellect and cultivated incisive logical thinking, and these capacities enabled me to master the information conveyed in my classes more quickly and effectively.

  点评2:简要点评自己的大学期间的思维模式转变的这一段,显得申请者非常成熟和理性。从这一段中多多少少能看出来申请者成为一个优秀的法律学者的潜质。:

Several key internships in law firms allowed me to step out of classroom and gain practical experience from a challenging and engaging real world environment. During my time with Yingda, a top Hubei Province-based international law firm, I worked as a law clerk. My job involved activities such as word pocessing, indexing and organizing case files and calendaring court appearance. During the internship, I learned to align the facts to locate relevant statutes that apply to a client’s situation and handled legal disputes both in and out of court. With the help of my supervisor Mrs.Long, I greatly expanded my knowledge of corporate law and in addition, developed an area of particular interest to me: the legal concerns of foreign investors in China. Prior to its entry into the WTO, China had been employing two distinct legislative patterns, resulting in an unnecessary and counterproductive discrimination against foreign investment. The repeal of the enterprise income tax for foreign-funded enterprises was one part of a pattern of making the investment climate more equitable, a process I commented on in several articles published in national periodicals. The internship experience is a major asset to my understanding of the law and my preparation for my future LLM studies at the Boston College Law School.

Three and a half years’ learning paid off abundantly not only in laying me a concrete knowledge foundation of law but also in leading me a balanced life, one that includes engagement both inside and outside academic and professional work. One of my most formative projects was setting up the first English language debate association at XYZ University of Economics and Law in my freshman year, and subsequently hosting many inter-university debate contests. To my delight, I won the title of “Best Debater” in multi-university competitions, but I learned more from the organizational, leadership and teamwork aspects of my endeavor than I did from the award. From debate itself, I have learned that preparation and the ability to think on one’s feet are as important as eloquence, though I hope all three will be useful in achieving my career goals.

With a solid foundation in law and proficiency in English, I am now looking forward to pursuing further education in the United States, and accessing information about its developed legal system through its interactive teaching methods. During the LLM program, by applying the organizational experience I have gained from my extracurricular activities, I hope to engage my classmates in activities and debate that deepens our understanding of the law from both an objective and comparative perspective. Recently I have been working on the national bar exam of China. In order to pass the universally admitted “most difficult test in China”, I strived to master the application of legal principles and sought considerable acquaintance with articles of Chinese statutory law. Amazingly in my first attempt, I made it. But it is only halfway to become an international bilingual lawyer who is not only proficient in civil law and common law system, but also being licensed to practice law in both jurisdictions. After graduation, I hope to pass the bar exam of an American state and intern at an US law firm. I plan to devote my career mainly in no court action in an US law firm China-based office or a multinational corporation when I come back to my country. I believe attending the LLM program at Boston College Law School will be an eye-opening tour toward my destination and hopefully I would make a lasting impact on the school in return.

  Thank you for your consideration.
